Buying a solar flood light usually starts the wrong way round — people pick a wattage first and hope it covers the yard. Work the other way: measure the space, then match it to a model. This guide gives you the numbers.

Start with the area, not the watt

Wattage on solar lights is a marketing label more than an electrical one. What actually determines brightness is the LED count, the efficiency of the 5054 quad-core chips, and how much energy the battery can store. The practical shortcut is coverage: how many square metres one unit lights to a usable level.

  • 50-80 m2 — doorway, shop front, small courtyard. 100W.
  • 80-100 m2 — single driveway, back garden, farm entrance. 200W.
  • 100-130 m2 — workshop apron, compound, small parking bay. 300W.
  • 130-160 m2 — construction yard, loading zone. 400W.
  • 160-200 m2 — parking lot, sports court, storage site. 500W.

Mounting height changes everything

The same light mounted at 2.5 m and at 5 m produces very different results. Higher means wider spread but lower intensity on the ground. For a wall-mounted flood light, 3-4 m is the sweet spot; for a pole-mounted street light, 4-6 m. If you must go higher, buy one size up.

Battery capacity is the runtime budget

A 10,000mAh pack runs a 100W-class light for 10-12 hours. A 30,000mAh pack does the same for a 500W-class body. If your site has long rainy seasons, size the battery up rather than the LED — a bigger battery gives you margin on cloudy weeks.

Three mistakes we see all the time

  1. One big light instead of two smaller ones. Two units at opposite corners remove shadows; one bright unit creates harsh black corners.
  2. Panel in the shade. Check the sun path before you drill. A panel under an eave or behind a tree will never charge fully.
  3. Buying on price alone. Cheap units often list a huge “wattage” with a tiny battery — bright for two hours, dark by midnight.

How high should I mount a solar flood light?

3-4 m for wall mounting and 4-6 m for poles. Going higher spreads the light wider but reduces ground brightness, so consider one size larger.
