DHL, UPS or FedEx: Which Courier Can Ship Your Lithium Batteries?

There is no single courier that accepts every lithium battery shipment. Acceptance depends on the battery type, configuration, UN number, watt-hour rating, packaging, documents, destination and service level. This guide explains what each major express carrier is generally used for — and what to check before you pick one.

One of the most common questions we hear from battery exporters is deceptively simple: "Can I send this with DHL, UPS or FedEx?" The honest answer is that none of the three carriers gives a blanket yes or no. All three move lithium batteries every day — and all three reject lithium battery shipments every day, because the cargo did not meet the requirements for that particular lane, service or configuration.

The right question is not "which courier takes batteries" but "does this courier accept this battery, packed this way, to this destination."

The short answer

The short answer: acceptance is shipment-specific

No courier accepts every lithium battery. Whether a DHL, UPS or FedEx booking is possible depends on the specifics of the shipment.

The battery itself

Chemistry (lithium-ion vs lithium metal), configuration (standalone, packed with, or contained in equipment) and watt-hour rating all affect whether the shipment falls within what the carrier will accept on that service.

The shipment set-up

Packaging instruction compliance, the lithium battery mark, the Class 9 label where required, and supporting documents such as the UN38.3 test summary and MSDS/SDS.

The lane and service

Carriers state restrictions by destination country and by service — and some battery shipments are only accepted on specific accounts or after pre-approval.

This is why two shippers can send the "same" battery with different results: one lane accepts it, another refuses it. Carrier acceptance is determined case by case, not by the brand name on the waybill.

What each courier is generally used for

Broad patterns, not guarantees — every shipment is still subject to that carrier's acceptance rules.

DHL Express

Commonly used for documents, parcels, product samples and eligible lithium battery shipments moving quickly door-to-door. Some battery shipments — particularly certain configurations or destinations — may require a pre-approved account or prior arrangement with the carrier before they are accepted.

Best fit: urgent, small, well-documented eligible batteries and battery-powered equipment.

UPS

Often chosen for parcels, consumer electronics and battery-powered equipment. Lithium batteries are dangerous goods, so UPS dangerous-goods rules apply: correct UN number, packaging, marking, labelling and documentation for the specific configuration and service.

Best fit: electronics and equipment shipments where the battery travels in or with the device.

FedEx

Frequently used for parcels, samples, machinery parts and eligible battery shipments. Acceptance depends on meeting FedEx's packaging, labelling and documentation requirements for the battery type and configuration — including the lithium battery mark and, where applicable, Class 9 labelling.

Best fit: samples and spare parts consignments with compliant packaging and paperwork.

Rates and transit times also differ lane by lane, so the "best" courier for a battery shipment is usually the one that both accepts the cargo and offers workable cost and speed for that destination.

The checklist

What couriers look at before accepting a battery

Before any carrier accepts a lithium battery shipment, its dangerous-goods screening typically covers:

  • UN number — the correct classification for the actual configuration
  • Configuration — standalone lithium-ion batteries (UN3480) versus batteries packed with or contained in equipment (UN3481); lithium metal equivalents are UN3090 / UN3091
  • Watt-hour rating — Wh per battery and per package, against the limits for the service
  • State of charge (SoC) — relevant for certain loose-cell lithium-ion shipments
  • Packaging instruction compliance — inner packaging, short-circuit protection and outer packaging strength
  • Lithium battery mark & Class 9 label — correctly applied, sized and completed on each outer carton
  • UN38.3 test summary — for the exact battery model being shipped
  • MSDS / SDS — consistent with the battery specification and the labels on the cartons
  • Destination restrictions — some countries or lanes restrict or prohibit certain battery shipments

If any of these is missing or inconsistent, the shipment can be refused at acceptance — regardless of which courier you chose.

Quick self-check before choosing a courier

  • Do I know the UN number and configuration?
  • Is the Wh rating marked and within limits?
  • Do I have the UN38.3 summary and MSDS for this model?
  • Are packaging, lithium mark and labels compliant?
  • Does the destination country accept this battery type on express?
  • Does this shipment need a pre-approved carrier account?

If you cannot answer all six, get the shipment reviewed before booking.

Honest limits

When express is not the right answer

Express couriers are built for small, parcel-sized, eligible shipments. When your cargo grows — larger quantities, palletised DG configurations, standalone lithium-ion cells, or lanes where express acceptance is restricted — dedicated dangerous-goods air freight is often the more suitable route.

  • Commercial quantities beyond express parcel limits → DG air freight from China
  • Small eligible shipments and samples → battery express shipping, door-to-door
  • Restricted or complex configurations → air freight with correct DG documentation and handling

Choosing express for cargo it was never designed to carry is the fastest way to a refused booking — and a returned carton at your cost.

  • Standalone lithium-ion batteries (UN3480) in volume
  • Destination has limited express battery acceptance
  • Full dangerous-goods declaration required
