Shipping E-Bike & Scooter Batteries from China

E-bike and e-scooter batteries sit at the difficult end of the lithium spectrum: large capacity, high watt-hour ratings and — when shipped on their own — a dangerous-goods configuration that not every carrier will accept. This guide explains what actually applies when exporting them from China.

A spare battery for a phone ships as a small parcel. An e-bike battery is a different category of cargo entirely: a multi-kilogram lithium-ion pack, often rated several hundred watt-hours, that regulators and carriers treat with far more suspicion. If you export e-bikes, scooters or replacement batteries from China, the difference between a smooth shipment and a rejected booking usually comes down to preparation.

Below is what we ask every e-bike battery shipper to have ready before we book anything.

Why e-bike batteries get special treatment

E-bike and e-scooter batteries are large lithium-ion packs, typically assembled from many 18650 or pouch cells into a single enclosure with a high watt-hour rating. That combination — size, energy content and removable construction — places them among the most scrutinised battery products in the dangerous-goods system.

When a battery is shipped on its own, without the bike or scooter it powers, it is usually classified as UN3480 — lithium-ion batteries shipped separately. When it is packed in the equipment or contained in the vehicle, a different entry (UN3481) may apply. The configuration changes the packing instruction, the permitted quantity per package and, critically, which carriers will accept the cargo at all.

This is why two shipments of the identical battery can face completely different requirements depending on whether it travels alone, packed with a bike, or installed inside one. Confirm the configuration first — everything else follows from it.

Preparation

Information you will need before booking

Carriers, forwarders and acceptance staff will ask for a specific set of data on e-bike batteries. Missing any one of these can stop a booking before it starts:

  • Battery type and chemistry — lithium-ion (and the cell format, if known)
  • UN number — UN3480 or UN3481, depending on the configuration
  • Voltage — nominal voltage of the pack
  • Capacity — in ampere-hours (Ah)
  • Watt-hour rating — the Wh figure that drives most limits
  • Quantity and weight — number of packs, gross and net weight
  • Dimensions — of the battery and of the proposed cartons
  • Packaging details — what the batteries are currently packed in
  • UN38.3 Test Summary — for the exact battery model being shipped
  • MSDS / SDS — the safety data sheet matching that model

If the watt-hour rating is not printed on the battery label, it can be calculated from voltage × capacity — but the figure on the documentation, the label and the cartons must all agree.

The Wh rating decides a lot

For large packs like e-bike batteries, the watt-hour rating is the single most consequential number: it determines which packing instruction applies, which quantity limits may be relevant, and whether an export route exists at all under a given mode or carrier.

Know it, mark it, and keep it consistent across every document.

Compliance

Packaging considerations

E-bike batteries shipped as dangerous goods may require packaging that meets the applicable dangerous-goods packing requirements. Depending on the configuration and the packing instruction that applies, this can include:

  • Packaging tested and compliant for the relevant packing instruction
  • Short-circuit protection — protected terminals, no loose contacts
  • Inner packaging that prevents movement and damage in transit
  • Class 9 lithium battery hazard label on each outer carton
  • The lithium battery mark with the UN number, where required
  • Quantity limits per package, which depend on the packing instruction and mode

Quantity limits are not a single number — they depend on the packing instruction, the transport mode and the carrier's own acceptance policy. We verify the applicable limits against the actual configuration before cargo is presented for acceptance.

Quick self-check before you book

  • Is the Wh rating marked on each battery and carton?
  • Does the UN38.3 summary match this exact model?
  • Does the MSDS match the battery specification?
  • Are terminals protected against short circuit?
  • Do I know whether the battery ships alone or with the vehicle?

If any answer is no, resolve it before booking — not at the carrier counter.

International express

Courier networks can move e-bike batteries in some cases, but only if the carrier accepts the specific configuration, packaging and documentation. Policies for standalone large packs are strict and vary between carriers and destinations — an accepted configuration on one lane may be refused on another.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes that delay e-bike battery shipments

Missing model-specific UN38.3

A test summary for a similar — but not identical — battery model will not pass review. The UN38.3 summary must match the exact pack being shipped.

Mismatched MSDS

An MSDS that contradicts the specification, the labels or the actual cells is one of the most frequent causes of stalled bookings and acceptance rejections.

Wh rating not marked

Large packs must show their watt-hour rating. Unmarked or inconsistent Wh figures trigger questions — or outright refusal — at acceptance.

Undeclared standalone batteries

Shipping a removable e-bike battery as if it were ordinary cargo, or hiding it inside the vehicle, risks seizure and carrier penalties. Declare the configuration honestly.

Incomplete destination information

Missing consignee details, unclear delivery addresses or unknown import requirements delay clearance. Full destination information is part of the DG paperwork.

Assuming last time applies

Carrier policies and regulations are updated regularly. A configuration accepted last quarter may need re-confirmation today — always check before rebooking.
