How to Ship Lithium Batteries from China by Air

Air is the fastest way to move lithium batteries out of China — but it is also the most regulated. This guide walks through the five things that decide whether your battery cargo flies: classification, documents, packaging, routing and airline acceptance.

Battery cargo is not ordinary freight. Lithium batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods, and airlines scrutinise them far more closely than general cargo. Most problems we see — rejected bookings, delayed shipments, returned cartons — trace back to one of five things being wrong or missing before the cargo reaches airline acceptance.

Here is the sequence we follow for every battery air shipment from China.

Confirm the UN classification

Everything else — documents, packaging, cost — flows from the classification.

The distinction matters: loose cells (UN3480) face stricter packing instructions and state-of-charge limits than batteries contained in equipment (UN3481). If you are unsure which applies, send the product specification — we determine the classification from the actual configuration, not the product name.

Step 2

Prepare the documents

For most lithium battery air shipments you will need:

  • UN38.3 Test Summary — proof the battery model passed the UN transport tests
  • MSDS / SDS — chemistry, hazards and handling information
  • Battery specification — model, voltage, capacity, watt-hours, cell count
  • Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD) — for shipments that require one
  • Commercial invoice & packing list — export documentation

Have these reviewed before booking. A mismatch between the MSDS, the spec sheet and the actual labels is one of the most common reasons battery cargo stalls at acceptance.

Step 3

Packaging, marking & labelling

Air transport of batteries is unforgiving on packaging. Depending on the configuration, requirements can include:

  • IATA-compliant inner packaging with short-circuit protection
  • Rigid outer packaging with sufficient strength
  • Class 9 hazard label and lithium battery mark on each outer carton
  • State-of-charge limits for certain loose-cell shipments
  • Quantity limits per package according to the packing instruction

We check packaging and labels against the applicable packing instruction before the cargo is presented for acceptance.

  • Do I know the UN number?
  • Do I have the UN38.3 summary for this exact model?
  • Does the MSDS match the battery spec?
  • Are the Wh ratings marked on the cartons?
  • Do I know the destination's import requirements?

If any answer is no, resolve it before booking — not at the airline counter.

Step 4

Choose the right route

South China offers three practical gateways: Hong Kong (HKG), Shenzhen (SZX) and Guangzhou (CAN). The right choice depends on the battery configuration, the airline's acceptance policy, the destination and cost.

  • Small, eligible shipments → international express (DHL / UPS / FedEx), door-to-door
  • Larger commercial quantities → consolidated DG air freight
  • Complex configurations → direct DG air freight with dedicated handling

Transit time is confirmed per shipment — it is not a fixed promise, because DG and battery cargo can require additional handling or acceptance procedures.
