Do Solar Lights Work in Winter, Rain and Cloudy Weather?

Short answer: yes, they work. Longer answer: winter gives you fewer charging hours and a lower sun angle, so you need a bigger margin. Plan for it and you will never notice.

What actually changes in winter

• Fewer hours. A winter day may offer 4-5 usable sun hours instead of 8-9.
• Lower sun. A flat panel catches much less; a tilted panel recovers most of the loss.
• Longer nights. You need light from 5 pm instead of 8 pm.
• Cold is fine. Lithium batteries dislike heat far more than cold.

How many cloudy days can you ride through?

With a full charge and a healthy battery, most units cover 2-3 consecutive overcast days at reduced output. Heavy rain plus cloud for a week will show up as shorter nights unless you plan for it.

Four settings that get you through a cloudy week

1. Steepen the panel. Latitude plus 10-15 degrees in winter catches a low sun far better.
2. Use the timer. A 4 or 6 hour setting halves the nightly drain until the weather turns.
3. Drop to motion or lower output modes where your model supports them.
4. Size the battery up when you buy — the cheapest insurance for a cloudy climate.

Rain is not a problem
