A solar street light replaces three trades with one afternoon: no trenching, no conduit, no mains connection. Follow these steps and the light will run dusk to dawn from the first evening.
What you need
- Pole or wall (60 mm pole top is the standard fit — poles are not included in our kits)
- Drill, masonry or wood bits, socket set
- The supplied bracket, panel, lamp, cable and remote
- 20 minutes of daylight left for the test
Step 1 — Walk the site at the right time
Visit at the hour you actually need light. Note every shadow: trees, rooflines, water tanks, a neighbour’s wall. The mounting point for the light and the mounting point for the panel are two different decisions, which is the whole advantage of a split design.
Step 2 — Fix the pole or wall bracket
Set the pole in concrete and let it cure, or bolt the wall bracket into solid masonry with anchors. For roads, 4-5 m is typical for a 200W unit; 5-6 m for 300W.
Step 3 — Mount the panel facing the sun
In the northern hemisphere face it south, in the southern hemisphere face it north. Tilt it at roughly your latitude, plus 10-15 degrees in winter. A flat panel loses a surprising amount of winter sun.
Step 4 — Mount the lamp and run the cable
Fit the lamp arm, angle the head toward the area you want lit, then connect the panel cable and tighten the waterproof connectors by hand plus a quarter turn. Leave a small drip loop so water runs off instead of into the joint.
Step 5 — Charge before the first night
Switch the unit off with the remote and let the panel charge the battery for a full sunny day before first use. This single step fixes most “it only works for two hours” complaints.
Step 6 — Test and set the timer
After dark, switch on with the remote, then set a timer if you want the light to stop at 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours. In automatic mode the light sensor handles dusk-to-dawn on its own.
Mistakes that cost you runtime
- Panel under a tree “just for the afternoon” — that is when it charges.
- Lamp and panel both facing the same way on a wall that never sees sun.
- Skipping the first full-day charge.
- Mounting too high for the model — the light lands where you do not need it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an electrician to install a solar street light?
No. There is no mains connection. The only wiring is the supplied cable between the solar panel and the lamp head.
What pole size do I need?
Our lamp arms fit a standard 60 mm pole top. Poles are not included in the kit because shipping them costs more than buying locally.
How long before the light works?
Give the battery one full sunny day of charging before the first night, then it should run 10-12 hours automatically.
