Most disappointing solar lighting projects are not under-powered — they are badly spaced. Too far apart and you get zebra stripes of light and dark. Too low and the light pools under the pole and leaves the middle dark.
Height first, then spacing
Set height by model and location, then calculate spacing as roughly 3 to 4 times the mounting height for even overlap.
| Location | Model | Height | Spacing | Coverage per unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden path, single driveway | 100W | 3-4 m | 10-14 m | 60-90 m2 |
| Village road, courtyard, parking bay | 200W | 4-5 m | 14-18 m | 90-120 m2 |
| Main road, work yard, compound | 300W | 5-6 m | 18-24 m | 120-160 m2 |
One side or both?
For paths and narrow lanes, single-side mounting is fine. For roads wider than about 8 m, either use staggered poles alternating sides, or mount two units opposite each other. Staggered is cheaper and usually looks better.
Corners and gates need their own unit
Do not try to light a corner with a pole on the straight. Put one unit at the corner itself — that is where people and vehicles need to see.
Quick project maths
Take the length of the road, divide by the spacing, and add one for the end. A 90 m village road at 18 m spacing needs 5-6 units of 300W, or 6-7 of 200W if you want lower poles.
Frequently asked questions
How far apart should solar street lights be?
Roughly 3 to 4 times the mounting height. At 5 m, space poles 15-20 m apart for even overlap without dark gaps.
Should poles be on one side or both sides of a road?
One side is fine for paths and narrow lanes. For roads wider than 8 m, stagger poles alternately or mount units opposite each other.
How many lights do I need for a 100 m road?
At 18 m spacing, about six units of 300W, or seven of 200W if you prefer lower poles.
